As it stands, it's merely good - not quite great. And it's a shame, too, because this could have turned out to have been something really special. It feels as if the show's producers were gearing up for a long run, but the simple fact that the show was so difficult to track down sealed its fate early in its life. Unfortunately, it was aired in inconvenient time slots and got little in the way of promotion. Roughnecks debuted late in the summer of '99 and ran for nearly forty episodes (two season's worth) before it was cancelled. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that if the movie didn't work for you, the show just might. If you liked the movie then you will most likely enjoy this show just as much. The same thing can be said for the CG-animated series, Roughnecks, but it has the advantage of being able to take the time to more thoroughly develop both its characters and its plot. Love it or hate it, you can't deny the fact that Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers was a delightful action film.
Tonally, it's very much like the violent chaos so wonderfully depicted in the film Aliens, the video game Starcraft, and any piece of literature that has to do with Conan the Barbarian. Who doesn't love carnage? I doubt even the most pacifist of peaceniks doesn't get a slight charge out of seeing a grizzled space marine unload half a clip of pulse rifle ammo into a bug, only to finish it off with a mini-rocket.
